While Corns and calluses are rarely painful, they can be an unsightly addition to an open toe pair of shoes!
Corns and Calluses are thickened, hardened layers of skin that usually arise when as a result of the skin trying to protect itself from friction or increased pressure on a certain area. They are most commonly found on toes and feet and while they are rarely painful, they can be quite unsightly!
The difference between corns and calluses are usually where they are located. Corns are usually found on bony parts of the foot such as toes, whereas calluses are found on more fleshy parts, such as the underside of the foot.
Causes of Corns and Calluses
Pressure and friction from repetitive actions cause corns and calluses to develop and grow. Some sources of this pressure and friction include:
- Ill-fitting shoes. Wearing tight fitting or even loose fitting shoes, can cause friction and rubbing to begin in certain areas. Typically these areas are the little toes, underside of the big toe and the heel.
- Wearing shoes without socks can amplify the issue and create greater friction on your feet.
Almost everyone will develop corns and calluses and some stage in their life, people may be more at risk due to their skin type or daily activity.
